REVIEW

"A ghost romance that is just plain fun!"

Rand MacPherson had always felt strangely tied to the deserted house built by his grandfather Colin. He didn't realize that the woman Colin murdered still lingered there. Cassandra Kinross had died cruelly, and as her last act cursed the man who killed her and all of his descendants -- including Rand. But this man was changing all the rules -- not only did he feel her presence in the house, but he could talk to her as well! Now they just had to figure out what was going on and for that they were going to need a little help.

Enter Rand's mother, her psychic friend and assorted family members. Insert chaos as Cassandra tries to keep Rand from messing with 'her' house and Rand tries to keep everyone from finding out about the resident ghost. Add a pinch of extended-family drama and second-character romance. Voila!

YOU'RE THE ONE, Judi McCoy's second novel for Zebra, is a ghost romance featuring a plucky Scottish heroine and the handsome building magnate who just happens to be her destined soul mate. Of course the first concern is -- is the ending satisfying? The ending of a ghost romance is always a tricky business. YOU'RE THE ONE builds gradually to a very satisfying and believable ending. It is a bit melodramatic, but after everything Rand and Cassandra go through a little melodrama may be warranted. McCoy's characterization is well-done, and though it doesn't have the deep historical intrigue of some ghost romances -- it is firmly placed in the present -- the paranormal aspect of the novel is a constant presence.

A neat addition to the novel is the curse. Not only does it provide a handy catalyst for the rest of the book, but it also adds a piquant sense of destiny to Rand and Cassandra's romance. The destiny idea isn't really developed but it is there. It is also nice to see a ghost romance that isn't angsty or painful, but is just plain fun!
