"Tips for authors to promote themselves and their books."
Karen Syed owns a bookstore in Texas, is an editor for
Echelon Press, and has published several romance novels
under the name Alexis Hart. This booklet gives new and
midlist writers lots of tips on promoting themselves and
their books at very little cost. The examples the author
provides are based on the romance novel industry, but the
ideas are applicable to writers in all genres. Face it, unless you are Nora Roberts, you aren't going to
be a guest on major network talk shows. But you could
possibly be invited onto your local TV and radio shows or
get featured in your hometown newspaper. You probably can't
afford to buy full-page ads in the New York Times, but you
can hand out business cards, bookmarks, and flyers
publicizing your books. Ms. Syed describes the most
effective ways to make an impact in the best places to
reach readers: the Internet, bookstores, the media (TV,
radio, and print), and libraries. She encourages writers to
work together to promote themselves and each other -- do
group booksignings, hand out bookmarks for each other's
books, interview each other and submit articles to local
and writing publications. She also reminds writers that
they meet potential book buyers and readers everywhere --
consider the general public to be your audience and always
be ready to provide information on your books.
