REVIEW

"For every adventurer and mystery-solver..."

After Mandie and her friends, Joe and Celia, find an old Cherokee quilt with a message sewn into it in an old chest in the attic, Mandie asks her Uncle Ned to take it to his Uncle Wirt, the oldest member of the Cherokee tribe, to translate the message. However, when he refuses to tell her what the strange writing on the quilt says, determination ready to explode within her, makes her even more curious. The only thing that he will tell her is that the message is a secret, and that she should put the quilt back where she got it from because his Uncle Wirt said not to tell what the sad, bad message says.

As a true adventurer and mystery-solver, and for reasons only Mandie clearly understands, she just has to know what the message says. Why is it a secret?

Ms. Leppard's delightful story is sure to keep the interest of young boys and girls as Mandie tries to find the truth behind the old mystery quilt.

The characters are intriguing, and the dialogue and setting are realistic and true to life for the time period in which the book takes place. Youngsters will learn about the old days, about family values and respect while reading a fantastic story.

Included in the book are instructions by Stephanie Whitson, on how to make your own quilt pattern.

As a new Mandie fan, with a lot of catching up to do (35 completed Mandie books with more in the making), I highly recommend MANDIE AND THE QUILT MYSTERY by Lois Gladys Leppard for your adventurous young adult.
