"Callan Kilkenny's story and what a story it is!"
Susan Squires can take the most unlikely and undeserving
character and turn him into a bona-fide hero! This is just
what she's done with Callan Kilkenny. For those readers
who read THE BURNING, they may recall that Callan had been
defeated in a battle with Stephen Sencai. Stephen
destroyed Callan's army but refused to destroy him. Now Callan has decided to seek out the doctor who
supposedly is looking for a cure to this horrible virus in
his blood. When he finally finds where Dr. Blundell lives,
he arrives just in time to save him from an ancient
vampire who doesn't want a cure to be found. Callan also
realizes why Dr. Blundell is looking for a cure. It seems
his daughter Jane was also infected with The Companion.
Callan tells Dr. Blundell and Jane he will help but only
if he is cured once and for all. He just wants to forget
all of the horror he's known in his life and thinks that
being cured will be the answer. Callan knows that more vampires will come to try and
destroy Dr. Blundell and his studies because they don't
want a cure to be found. He also knows it is still the
born against the made with the born trying to destroy as
many of the made as possible. Can he help the doctor and
his daughter without getting emotionally involved
especially when he finds out that Jane being turned was a
total accident and one for which she had no say. I have yet to read any book of Susan Squires' that I did
not totally become engrossed in reading. It is the same
way with this one. I have one huge problem with all of
Susan's books and that is I find myself compelled to read
them much too quickly. As always, I eagerly await the next
book!
