Karak is the avatar of a village--he protects people with different hair and eye coloring from being sacrificed to the sun god. Karak uses his abilities as a shapeshifter to shift into a puma and stop the high priest's minions. He also has another driving force, he must kill the priest who sacrificed his mother. Only then will Karak's duty be upheld and he will be allowed to continue with his life and settle down. Karak is surprised, when he spots a woman in the jungle gathering plants and is instantly attracted to her. The puma inside of him identifies her as his mate. Unfortunately, Mireya is a priestess and not allowed to marry. Will Karak be able to accomplish his goals and convince Mireya to leave her chosen life?

Mireya and Karak live in a harsh, superstitious world where a person's coloring can be a death sentence. Mireya must choose between her way of life and her love for Karak, and Karak must complete his mission before he is free to be with Mireya.
