REVIEW

"Detailed romantic suspense."

Nick Sinestra is a New York City cop with a side job at Star Gazer magazine, a tabloid known for its sleazy celebrity stories. Portia Wells is a widow with a celebrity past and a soon-to-be high profile future as president of the Nature Preservation Society. The two meet when Nick covers security at a fundraiser where Portia is the guest speaker.

Portia sees taking the role as NPS President as a way of opening an investigation into her husband's death. She's sure his traffic accident was anything but an accident in order to get him out of the way of a land developer who has his sights set on NPS protected land. Nick sees Portia as a way to earn some extra cash when he's forced to take a month-long vacation after punching a colleague.

Someone is determined to scare Portia off the investigation, and accidents begin to happen on her farm. When her barn burns, Nick decides to look into the death of her husband. Soon he's making someone nervous, and he fears that Portia may suffer the same fate as her husband.

I enjoyed AFTER HOURS by Ms. Erickson. I feel the story takes awhile to get where it's going, but the author has a gift for detail that gives the reader a sense of experiencing the surroundings along with her characters, making an enjoyable read.
