"Demostrates the healing power of love."
Fulk de Galliard grew to be extremely handsome and very
large. Accidentally killing his only brother with a single
blow, he's disowned by his father. Banished from his home,
Fulk loses everything important in his life. Then, in
battle, he discovers he has a bloodthirsty beast living
inside of him. Afraid to unleash the beast, Fulk takes
every opportunity possible to avoid violence. Some think
him a coward, giving him the nickname Fulk the Reluctant. Jehanne has tried to be the son her father always wanted,
but no matter how hard she tries, it's not good enough.
Learning all there is to know about battle and refusing all
suitors, she becomes known as the Iron Maiden of
Windermere. When Fulk is sent to take Windermere by force, if
necessary, marry Jehanne and get an heir, Jehanne fights to
keep him out. But when that doesn't work, Fulk and Jehanne
agree to make it appear they're in alliance. Fulk will do
whatever he has to so he can send for his sister and find
her a proper husband. Jehanne will do whatever she has to
do to keep her people safe. Neither expects to fall in love
with the other. Fulk thinks he'll never be able to break
through Jehanne's stubborn pride, and she's afraid he will
be repulsed and turn away from her when he sees her scars. I found this story kind of sad in the beginning, with Fulk
being misunderstood and ill-used and Jehanne's hard heart
and mistreatment by her father. I was glad when they
started to fall in love with each other. All in all, a very
nice story.
