"This new author's debut is an excellent historical romance."
When Eliza Merriweather and her sister, Grace, agree to let
their great aunts give them a Season, they do so only to
make them happy. Not having any intention of actually
finding a husband, Eliza's real plan is to collect her
inheritance, go to Italy and study art as soon as the
Season is over. But when her aunts haul out a book called
The Rules of Engagement, she realizes how serious they are
about finding the young sisters husbands. When Eliza
discovers the book is actually a military strategy
guidebook, she knows she is in trouble. Magnus MacKinnan, the fifth Earl of Somerton, has a real
mess to clean up after his brother's death. He's hopeful
that the ship he invested in will soon come in, so he won't
have to marry for the money he desperately needs. Soon after they meet, Eliza and Magnus enter into an
agreement. Eliza will investigate potential brides for
Magnus and paint his portrait. In return, Magnus will
pretend to court Eliza and keep away any possible suitors.
But all too soon the scheme is no longer a game and they
fall in love. Magnus is determined to relinquish his lands
if he can marry Eliza for love. And because Eliza loves
him, she lets him go, so he can marry for money and save
his home. This debut by new author Ms. Caskie was an excellent read -
extremely funny and very romantic. I kept a box of tissues
handy, not only for the sad parts, but also for the
humorous ones. I will definitely read it again.
