Jessica Barnes, the ambitious one, and her three very best friends - Mickey, the geeky one; Beth, the lonely one; and Cassandra, the sexy one - live in Chicago. Adam Taylor is a consultant at Jessica's place of work, Hard-Wire Networks, a computer networking equipment manufacturer.

Adam has been hired to look for ways to economize the business and prepare it for a takeover. Jessica knows that if this happens, her job is gone and so are her dreams for a vice-presidency and owning a Porsche. The more Adam sees Jessica, the more he wants to get to know her. He tries to think of Jessica as employee 44713, but it just isn't working.

This is a lively story with Jessica trying to ignore Adam as he fights the dilemma of cutting her job and being so attracted to her. Jessica's friends give her a hard time about falling in love, but their time is coming.
