"Exciting and intriguing Regency romance."
London, 1814: Julia Delacroix and Emma Merriweather are
trying to locate William Thorne, the Duke of Berinwick.
However, George Warren answers the door when they arrive
at
the duke's townhouse. Julia needs to raise money for
Emma's
coming-out, so she's willing to sell a family heirloom. At
the jewelers, a patron mentions that the duke would pay
more than the jeweler for the particular trinket. Warren tells the ladies he's going to visit his guardian
and would be happy to escort them to Black Castle. When
they meet the duke, they're quite surprised. In his youth,
William had been in an accident that left him with scars
and an eye patch. He has a talent for giving a decidedly
vile look to those who displease him, which has earned him
the reputation for being a "beast." Julia ignores his
attitude and proceeds with her business. William wants to
buy the trinket and also assist Julia in her difficulties. This story is exciting and adventurous. As William finds
love for the first time, Julia learns to trust a man. Add
in the mystery of Julia's uncle and Emma's coming-out and
you have a fun read. I liked Williams' mother and
stepfather especially with the jiggling and rocking of the
duke's black coach and the whispers coming from it.
