REVIEW

"Captivating historical romance!"

England, 1667

Just having lost her father, Caithren Leslie faces a dilemma. She has just learned that if she does not marry within one year, the family lands will revert to her brother, Adam, who has not lived there for over five years. Not wanting to be forced into marrying anyone, Caithren hopes to find Adam. On her travels, she meets up with Jason Chase, Marquess of Cainewood and although she finds him to be arrogant, Caithren realizes she will be safer traveling with him, even if he does seem to doubt her story. The attraction between the Marquess and Caithren is instantaneous and only seems to grow stronger.

Jason is on a mission to capture Geoffrey Gothard, a scoundrel who has wronged two of his villagers. Having posted award notices all over country doesn't help and Jason is determined to bring the criminal to justice himself and sets out to find him. In a fight with Gothard, Jason accidentally kills an innocent bystander whom Gothard uses as a shield to protect himself. It is while Jason is once again looking for Gothard that he comes across a Scottish lad who is actually a bewitching young girl. Believing her to be a bounty hunter also after the treacherous Gothard, Jason refuses to let her out of his sight.

The second book in the Jewel Trilogy by Lauren Royal, EMERALD is a wonderful and warm romance with a delightful plot. The main characters of Jason and Caithren are beautifully defined and the tale is also full of captivating historical flavor.

Peppered with many twists and turns, the story is one that will enthrall fans of Ms. Royal's. EMERALD boasts a unique plot that complements the characters with depth and perception that folds in and around a story in a way that is refreshing and exhilarating. I found EMERALD to be a story that is classic and unique. The plot is complex and intellectually stimulating and the story flowed along seamlessly with great authority.

EMERALD is soon to be followed by AMBER, the last book in the Jewel series, in August 2001. For those who enjoy fast paced and exciting historical adventures, EMERALD is definitely one not to be missed!
