"Wonderfully descriptive romance"
The first meeting between Deanna Lindsey and Patterson
Temple did not make a favorable impression on either one.
It took place in the city morgue at Bellevue Hospital.
Deanna was there because they had not been able to locate
any relatives of Stacy Howell and Deanna's business card
had been in Stacy's billfold. Stacy had been killed in a
traffic accident and they need her body identified.
Patterson was there because he knew Stacy because his
grandmother, Betts, baby-sat Jade, Stacy's seven-year-
old daughter. Deanna
dismissed Patterson as not important when he told her he
was a fireman with the NYFD and Patterson thought Deanna
was a first class snob. Neither Deanna nor Patterson knew just how their lives
would become entwined because of Jade. Deanna received a
call from Children's Services to inform her that she had
been named as Jade's guardian if something should happen to
Stacy. Since Deanna hadn't seen Stacy in about seven years
she could not imagine why Stacy had named her. She knew
that Patterson's
grandmother had Jade and he had told her Betts loved Jade
and wanted to keep her, but that he thought Betts was too
old. Deanna's life was just how she liked it, no children.
Her job managing the Information Center at a national
network in Manhattan was fulfilling and she had a good
relationship with a man who made no demands for marriage or
children. She knew taking Jade would interfere with her
relationship, if not the other parts of her life; but she
decided to take Jade until a final decision was made. Deanna's decision brought Patterson back into her life.
Patterson still thought she was a snob and that she would
not be able to handle life with a child. However, the more
contact they had, he began to change his mind about Deanna
and she began to change her mind about him. Deanna had
another worry in the form of Jade's father Marcus who had
just been released from prison. Marcus felt that just
being Jade's father gave him the right to disrupt her
life. He also was looking to make money off his
relationship to Jade. Patterson had his own problems with
finding a son he knew nothing about. These two people
brought together by one little girl go through some trying
times before they are able to admit their real feelings
about each other. SHE'S THE ONE is a wonderful story about two people with
different views of life, and how they overcome that
obstacle to form a loving relationship. It is filled with
some wonderful characters and characters that are not so
wonderful. Ms. Kitt has a way of describing details that
keeps the reader involved in what is going on. I loved
this book, which is my first Sandra Kitt novel but
certainly not my last. Reviewed by Hattie Boyd
