"Beautiful!! A Must Read!"
1867 Dakota Territory Seven years ago, Julia Robichaud fell in love and married
Andrew Garrett. A short while after the wedding, she found
out her husband's true origins placed them both on
different sides of the war -- she was a southern belle and
he was a Union spy. Hurt and betrayed, she divulged this
information to her uncle who had Andrew ambushed and shot.
Julia believed he had died. Now, Julia has remarried --
this time to Philip Bonneaux, a riverboat gambler -- and
she's headed West with her five year-old daughter, Suzanne,
to find her errant husband. At Fort Laramie, Wyoming, she
encounters Andrew and the pain of years ago wells to the
surface and she faints right at his feet. The years apart have been kinder on Julia looks-wise than
they have on Andrew. She's still as beautiful as he
remembered. Second in command at Fort Laramie, Andrew
feels honor bound to look after Julia and her daughter when
they are abandoned by the wagon train. He still believes
that they are married but does all he can to help her find
Philip even while torn between his honor, duty and love for
her. THE HORSE SOLDIER by Merline Lovelace is a beautiful
romance of love and betrayal that penetrates deep into your
soul. Brimming with strong characters and powerful
emotions, the story flows smoothly and quickly envelopes
the reader into its heart. The historical details and the
military backdrop are fabulously etched -- so clear you can
easily picture it. The conflict between Julia and Andrew is portrayed
beautifully as they come together again and deal with each
other and their past, learning to understand and accept.
Of course the fact that Julia is married to another man now
is something that stands between them as love blossoms
anew. Ms. Lovelace has handled the conflict extremely well
and certainly added enough passion to the tale to keep the
reader hooked to the last page. I found the secondary
delightful too for each added so much richness and depth to
the story and made it all come alive. THE HORSE SOLDIER is a novel not to be missed. Simply
a 'must read'.
