"An Entertaining Contemporary Romance"
Marlee Reid works in the cut-throat business of a news
room in a local television station. She is interested in
becoming the next sports anchor for KNCS-TV after her
friend and mentor dies in an accident. She hasn't always
gotten along that well with her boss, Renn Davis, but
other people working at the station are aware of the
attraction between the two even if they are not. When
Renn's boss wants to promote her lover, Tag, to the job,
Renn favors Marlee who is the better reporter and works
much harder than her antagonist. Marlee goes to the local basketball game after a huge win
and walks into the locker room with her camera man
getting interviews from the shocked (and naked) players.
Although some people are outraged, others think it is
funny and Marlee comes out with an excellent interview
with the star player. It titillates the watching audience
so that KNCS-TV's rating escalates. Tag gives his boss an
ultimatum while Renn continues to support Marlee for the
anchor job. Marlee doesn't know what to think and wonders
if Renn really does not want her to have the coveted
position. As Marlee and Renn start to care about each
other, the in-fighting continues. THE WOMAN IN THE NEWS concerns a woman who longs for a
career as a sports anchor and at the same time is
interested in contributing to the small town where she
lives and works. She is a caring person who comes up
against a woman who is lonely, feeling her age and a
sports person that is living off his past merits. The
hero is somewhat prejudiced against women doing sports
news but changes his mind as he sees how the heroine does
her job. THE WOMAN IN THE NEWS is an entertaining story
with interesting characters, good pacing and a
satisfactory romance from the pen of K. N. Casper.
