REVIEW

"Touching, thought-provoking time-travel romance."

Jesse Spotted Horse has finally gotten the grant to make his film at the DuBois Indian Reservation Industrial School. He wants to show the world the mistreatment of Indians at the government's hands, even though they thought they were doing good.

Jesse's first stumbling block is Kathleen Prescott, the great-great-granddaughter of the founding father of the school, Reverend Providence Divine. Kathleen has held everything about the school as a sacred trust.

Jesse runs into another problem when the actress he's picked can't do the part. He asks Kathleen to help, and she reluctantly agrees. As she's dressed in period clothes for the filming, an accident occurs, filling the barn with smoke. The next thing Jesse and Kathleen know, they've traveled back to the old days of the DuBois school.

This is a really good story. In the past, Jesse finds that everything was not as horrible as he believed. And Kathleen learns that things were not as wonderful as she's always been told. Discovering what they must do to return themselves to the present made this story touching and thought-provoking.

Summary

In her acclaimed time-travel romances, award-winning author Judie Aitken "brilliantly brings history to life" (Alicia Rasley) by blending "a timeless tale of love and destiny" (Kathleen Eagle) with actual Native American lore. ... "A powerful mix that proves Judie Aitken is a creative force with a wonderful future" (Midwest Book Review).

Jesse Spotted Horse had every good reason to shoot a documentary on the history of Native American boarding schools -- he promised his Lakota grandmother he would reveal the true story.

Kathleen Prescott had every good reason to stop the film from being made -- she inherited one of the schools from her ancestors and fear bad publicity.

But neither Jesse nor Kathleen had any reason to expect the power of mutual attraction -- or the magic of an heirloom brooch -- to bridge the gap between them. Now, as the sparks begin to fly, the handsome Lakota and the prim young beauty are swept through time to the distant year of 1886, where the echoes of the past are as real and alive as the beating of their hearts. Together, in this forgotten time and place, they must face the truth -- about their heritage... and their desire.
