"Highly recommend this sophisticated and intriguing first novel."
Phizz Marston is a dandy who can have a man excluded from
White's with a dismissive comment about his tailor. He
loves to drink champagne and dances exquisitely. At
Almack's, when he dances with some of the less sought-after
debutantes, their season is assured. Imagine the shock of
David Hervey, Earl of Linseley, when he finds himself
fascinated with Phizz instead of his dance partner. David
has left his country estate to come to London to vote at
the House of Lords and is bemused when Phizz complements
his cravat. Funny that the young man has such smooth white
skin. When David stumbles on disturbing news, he feels compelled
to warn Phizz. Slowly the masquerade unravels as danger and
secrets form a partnership to uncover the threat to Phizz's
unique world. With wonderful research to give a detailed view of life
behind doors of Regency England, the colour and smells
paint a vivid picture of a opulence and greed. I enjoyed
learning about the contrast between country and city life,
and the political expediency that led to some of the
biggest social changes of the era. Even the more unsavoury
lives are painted with understanding pragmatism. I love the
fact that both Phizz and David are experienced and enjoy
life's pleasures. It is a very real threat to their
relationship that Phizz enjoys the freedom 'he' has
discovered as a man. They also have their faults, which
sometimes clash with each other's egos. The plot is
intriguing and I was surprised at the ending. And the
sensual scenes are lush, hot, and non-apologetic fun. This
was a sophisticated novel and a pleasure to read. I highly
recommend this first novel by Pam Rosenthal, and eagerly
anticipate her next novel. Reviewed by Karen Williston for Sensual Romance.
