REVIEW

"Two stories in one -- romance within romance"

This novel is actually two stories in one: LADY SLIPPERS IN FAIRY DUST and KATE'S STORY. The first is about American businesswoman Johanna and English rock star Ian, who meet while on vacation in an idyllic summer cottage. Johanna feels trapped in a stale relationship and Ian is recovering from a protracted concert tour. They instantly connect but question whether their summer fling can survive a long- distance relationship.

The second story is about part-time romance author Kate, who has written her first book, LADY SLIPPERS IN FAIRY DUST, to escape her current relationship into fantasies of her favourite rock star, Simon. While visiting the States to put an unpleasant divorce behind him, Simon hears Kate giving a TV interview, alluding that her book's hero is based on real-life Simon. He is intrigued and sets out to learn more about this new author.

I enjoyed these stories; they were clever and the two sets of lovers were appealing, despite some unsavoury past adulterous histories. They are soul mates who need to work together to overcome life's challenges. As both novels are set in the Northeast, they have the tone and style of a Barbara Delinsky novel. For my taste, however, especially at the beginning of the novels, there is a bit too much backstory exposition and POV head hopping. The same effect could have been woven into the story with more subtlety and trusting the reader to understand with less explicit direction. While the sexual scenes are sensual, they seem more choreographed -- his leg went there, her arm fit here - - than emotional.

If you like modern fairy tales with a touch of the mystical, you will enjoy KNIGHTS IN SHINING ARMOR SOMETIMES PLAY GUITARS.
