"Love On Ice"
Rachel Gibson weaves a delightful tale in SEE JANE SCORE.
Jane Alcott is living in Seattle and writing a column
called Single Girl. Due to the illness of a sports
reporter she is drafted to become the beat reporter for the
Seattle Chinooks of the National Hockey League. Jane is an odd choice for hockey reporter as she knows zip
about the sport and has to rely on Ice Hockey for Dummies
and it's equivalents to do her job. Since the players at
first won't talk to her and enjoy dropping their jocks in
front of her; she has a tough time doing good columns. Jane also has another source of income that no one at her
paper knows of: she writes a porno column called Honey Pie
for a men's magazine. Through Honey Pie Jane has an outlet
for all of her fantasies and it is no surprise when our
hero ends up in her column. Luc Martineau is the team's goalie and has no time or use
for the press, as he has been burned by erroneous details
of his rehab from pain pills and his busy love life. Now
that Luc is raising his 16 year old sister and having his
best season in years, he is really guarding his privacy and
refusing to talk to the press. He gradually comes to trust
Jane and open up to her. But, but is horrified at being
immortalized (not to mention screwed into a coma) in the
anonymous Honey Pie's column. Jane and Luc gradually warm to each other and their
repartee is delightful--these are two sharp and funny
characters. Especially amusing were the superstitions that
the team had and everytime she had to call Luc a 'big dodo'
it just made me smile. I thought Jane and
Luc's 'happilyeverafter' ending was both believable and
satisfying. Rachel Gibson is one author who has not disappointed me yet
and with SEE JANE SCORE Gibson has scored another winner.
