REVIEW

"Gripping, emotional struggle of coming to terms with a violent past."

After fleeing Columbia and a violent past, Maya Vega has made a home and a future for herself in the United States. A prominent attorney, Maya now has her eye on the bench when an unwelcome visitor from Columbia pays her a visit.

Sheparard Reyes had never set eyes on Maya before tracking her down in Houston. She'd been his younger brother's lover 18 years earlier. His brother, a leftist guerilla, was killed, Maya disappeared and the family thought that was the end of it. Now, rumors of a baby, an heir, have begun to surface, and the Reyes family is eager to put them to rest, along with Maya, if necessary. Although she believed her baby died at birth, a renewed interest from her dead lover's family makes Maya wonder if what she was told was true. Maya leaves the U.S. to search for her son. But has she given up everything to chase a ghost, and possibly at the cost of her own life?

Ms. David's heroine faces her past and comes to terms with it, albeit somewhat fearfully. In the end, Maya looks to a new future, one she hadn't previously imagined. And she's able to lay her ghosts to rest and move on.

Shepard Reyes wants to find his brother's child as much as Maya does. Now that the truth about his nephew is known, the boy's life is once again in danger. There are too many people who don't want him to claim what is rightfully his....
