Summary

During the Great Fire of Chicago, Lucy Hathaway catches a baby tossed from the window of a burning building. Lucy raises the child, Maggie, as her own. Four years later, she encounters Randolph Higgins, an old friend whose daughter supposedly died in the fire. Knowing that Maggie is his daughter, Lucy marries Randolph, but clashes over Lucy's political pursuits put them at odds.
