Secrets in the Shadows

REVIEW

"A different take on the vampire culture"

Carolyn Mathers, former cop and now private investigator, has finally decided to start dating again after her fiancé left her at the alter three years before. He not only left her but he totally fell off the face of the earth. Even Carolyn couldn't find a trace of what happened to him.

Then one night at 10:00 p.m. while going to meet a date, she is attacked by a punk and is saved by none other than her ex-fiancé. What's up with that? Gray James has a heck of a story but he simply cannot tell Carolyn what it is. It seems he's been turned in to a vampire and now someone is trying to frame him for murder. There's no way Carolyn would be able to believe that story.

Gray underestimates Carolyn and her PI abilities. She does everything she can to not only track him down and find him but she also discovers his little secret. Now what will she do? Will she be so repulsed that she will leave him alone or will she do everything in her power to help him since she's never really gotten over him and his desertion of her?

Gray has a lot to worry about and now Carolyn is at the top of the list especially since Gray is under the watchful eye of the Guardians, a group of vampires who track down and destroy Killers. He must keep Carolyn safe even though she is making that very hard to do.

Jenna Black gives us a different approach to the concept of the vampire culture, albeit a very interesting one. Her book kept me engrossed from first page to last in order to learn exactly how Carolyn and Gray would sort out their differences and make things work if it was at all possible. I highly recommend this one.

Summary

Vampires.

They hunt in every major city, hidden by the crowds, shielded by disbelief. They are Killers, and their prey is human.

Not all vampires are Killers. The Guardians of the Night sacrifice the superior physical and psychic strength that comes with feeding on humans to protect them. But the Guardians walk a thin line, for even a single kill could leave them helplessly addicted to murder.

When detective-turned-P.I. Carolyn Mathers was left at the altar, she never once thought her fiancé had been turned into a vampire. Two years later, Gray reappears, bringing murder, mystery, and an unbelievable tale of Guardians, blood-thirsty Killers, and his own transformation with him.

And he's been accused of murder.

A first-rate P.I., Carolyn is determined to help. Gray won't allow what he is now to taint her -- but Carolyn vows to never let him go again.

But will helping Gray mean becoming a creature of the night?
