Karen Hawkins was born in a log cabin in the darkest, loneliest part of the Appalachian Mountains. After years of struggling, she put her thirteen and a half younger siblings through college and then began to write-

OK. That's not true. I was born in a lovely subdivision in Tennessee; I have two sisters and a brother; and I've been reading since . . . well, I can't remember, but I have an idea it was first grade. Truthfully, it would take a work of fiction to make my life interesting, so I spiced it up a bit. Authors are allowed to do that - it's called "Author Latitude." Or so I tell my son when I tell him the camel ate his missing socks.

I write humorous Regency-era novels for Avon Books. My next book, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER, comes out in August and boy, am I excited! I'm delighted to tell you that all those hours of sitting at the computer staring longingly at my bottle of Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum has paid off and the reviews have been phenomenal. I just hope I can sell enough books to convince my publisher that I'm the next Julie Garwood. I don't want to "be" Julie Garwood, mind you - that would be plagiarism of a life and I'm happy as I am, thank you. I just want Julie Garwood's royalty checks. So if you haven't bought my book yet, please go and get it and don't make my mother buy it for you.

She's funny that way.

I love writing humor because life is too serious as it is. You can keep all your sad, depressing Oprah books - I want empowerment, humor, sparkling characters, and lotsa good chuckles when I read. For me, that's what fiction is all about.

If you get the chance, drop by my website at http://www.karenhawkins.com and say hello!

Until then, I'll be at my computer, fingers curled over the keyboard, staring longingly at my bottle of Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum, and trying to find new ways to make you smile.
