I've tried almost every craft at least once: knitting, sewing, home renovation, upholstery, picture-framing, chair-weaving...the list goes on. But glassmaking is particularly fascinating to me. It's a challenging and demanding craft, one that takes concentration, skill, and luck. And the results are both beautiful and permanent.

I studied medieval art in college, and fell in love with 12th-century church windows. Even eight hundred years later, they fill cold stone buildings with radiant light, and they still inspire awe. Modern glassmaking has changed very little: it takes the same basic materials, and a lot of heat. And plenty of practice.

My character Em Dowell is both an artist and a businesswoman, managing her own shop in the Factory District in downtown Tucson, Arizona. She finds it hard enough to juggle earning a living and making glass, even before she finds a body in her studio.
